The Jane Austen Papershade
What a fabulous writer and what immortal words she wrote. I'm sure we all know the opening line of her most famous book, Pride and Prejudice: 'It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife'. And how we've loved the films and television series' which have dramatised her books.
If you get the chance to visit her home at Chawton in Hampshire you do get a real sense of her life and can marvel at the tiny writing table and chair where she wrote her books while the busy household roared around her. I'm a huge fan of Jane Austen and, in times of Lockdown and when things are tough for whatever reason, they are the comfort reads I turn to.
I've based the design of this Papershade on colour paintings of Jane which have been based on a tiny portrait made by Jane's sister, Cassandra. I've tried to capture the little curls on her forehead and the frills of her bonnet.
